5 Current Scams Targeting Nigerian Bank Accounts Right Now

5 Current Scams Targeting Nigerian Bank Accounts Right Now

Last Updated: October 2026

Quick Answer: What are the most common scams in Nigeria right now?

The most current scams targeting Nigerian bank accounts include: 1. Fake bank alerts (POS scams), 2. The "mistaken transfer" scam, 3. AI voice cloning for family emergencies, 4. BVN phishing links, and 5. Fake loan apps demanding upfront fees. Never trust a screenshot—always check your own bank app.

Scammers are getting smarter. They no longer rely on just sending emails from a "foreign prince." Today, they use fake bank alerts, AI voice clones, and sophisticated phishing links to drain Nigerian bank accounts.

At Wisdom Online Income Hub, our goal is to keep you safe. Here are the 5 most dangerous scams circulating right now, and exactly how to protect yourself.

The 5 Dangerous Scams:

1. The "Fake Alert" POS / Vendor Scam

How it works: A customer comes to your POS or shop, makes a purchase, and shows you a screenshot of a successful transfer. But your phone doesn't ring, and your balance hasn't changed. They claim "network is bad" or "my bank is delaying the alert." If you release the goods, you lose your money.

How to protect yourself: Never trust a screenshot. Never trust a debit alert on the customer's phone. Only release goods when you check your own bank app and see the credit alert.

2. The "Mistaken Transfer" Scam

How it works: Someone calls or texts you frantically, saying they mistakenly sent money to your account and begging you to send it back. They send a fake debit screenshot to prove it. When you check your app, no money entered. If you send your own money back, you have just been scammed.

How to protect yourself: Always check your real bank app. If the money is not there, it was never sent. Real mistakes are reversed by the bank, not by you sending money manually.

3. AI Voice Cloning (The Family Emergency Scam)

How it works: This is terrifying. Scammers use AI to clone the voice of your mother, father, or sibling from their social media videos. They call you crying, saying they are in the hospital or in trouble and need money urgently.

How to protect yourself: Always hang up and video call the person back on their known number. AI can clone a voice, but it cannot do a live video call of your family member.

4. The BVN Phishing Link (Smishing)

How it works: You receive an SMS saying your BVN is blocked or your account will be closed in 2 hours unless you click a link (often a `bit.ly` link) to "unblock" it. The link takes you to a fake bank site that steals your card details and BVN.

How to protect yourself: Banks and the CBN will never send you a `bit.ly` link. If you are worried, log into your official bank app or visit your branch physically.

5. Fake Loan Apps (Advance Fee Fraud)

How it works: You see an ad for a loan with a very low interest rate. You apply, and they say you are approved, but you must pay a "10% insurance fee" or "activation fee" to unlock the money. Once you pay, they block you.

How to protect yourself: Legitimate loan apps deduct their fees directly from the loan amount; they never ask for upfront payment from your own pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What should I do if I accidentally clicked a phishing link?

If you entered your details, immediately log into your bank app and block your card. Call your bank's customer care to freeze the account, and change your passwords. Report the link to your bank.

Can a scammer use my BVN to steal my money?

A BVN alone cannot be used to debit your account; they need your card details, OTP, or PIN. However, a BVN can be used to access loans in your name. Never share your BVN or OTP with anyone.

How do I know if a loan app is registered in Nigeria?

Check the FCCPC (Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission) website for a list of approved digital money lenders. If the app is not on the list, do not use it.
